Focus: Using Technology to Explain How to Work World Problems

  • Unit Title: Using Technology to Present How to Work Word Problems

  • Grade Level: 2nd Grade

  • Subject: Math

  • Duration: 2 to 3 days

Goals

  • Problem: My second grade students are having difficulty with multi-step word problems and determining what operation to use to solve the problem. Students need to recognize steps used to solve multi-step word problems. In order to help my students have successful learning experiences, students will work in collaborate groups to create a presentation. The presentation will include the steps needed to work word problems, and it will include word problems created by the group. Students will have to present and explain their project to the class.

  • Technology Standard: Conceptualize, guide, and manage individual or group learning projects using digital planning tools with teacher support.

  • Content Standard(s):
Process Standards
Each topic studied in this course should be developed with careful thought toward helping every student achieves the following process standards.

M2P1. Students will solve problems (using appropriate technology)
a. Build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving.
b. Solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts.
c. Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems.
d. Monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving.

M2P2. Students will reason and evaluate mathematical arguments.
a. Recognize reasoning and proof as fundamental aspects of mathematics.
b. Make and investigate mathematical conjectures.
c. Develop and evaluate mathematical arguments and proofs.
d. Select and use various types of reasoning and methods of proof.

M2P3. Students will communicate mathematically.
a. Organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication.
b. Communicate their mathematical thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others.
c. Analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others.
d. Use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely.

M2P4. Students will make connections among mathematical ideas and to other disciplines.
a. Recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas.
b. Understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another to produce a coherent whole.
c. Recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics.

Prerequisite Skills: Students must be able to read on 2nd grade level text, add, subtract, and use digital technological tools with teacher support.

  • Outcomes, or Essential Framing Question(s):

What technological tool can be used to organize a presentation about word problems?
What are the steps that I need to follow to solve multi-step word problems?
How can drawings help me to solve problems?
Why is important to read the problem through and re-read the question being asked?
How can I determine what mathematical operation is needed to solve the problem?
What clue words can help me to identify the mathematical operation needed to solve the problem?
